Hot Diggity Dog! Following the Lure of the Sonoran Hot Dog…

Sonoran dogs.  No matter where you go in Tucson, they seem to surround you.  Whether at roadside carts, trendy restaurants, or backyard cookouts—everyone seems to have some version of this regional favorite.  History suggests that these savory beauties originated in Hermosillo, the capital of Sonora, Mexico, making their way north and becoming popular in southern Arizona in the 1980’s.  These special hot dogs continued to gain popularity over the years, with Tucson recently earning recognition and praise from Food Network and Travel Channel critics for its superior Sonoran dogs.   Never tried one?  No worries!  There’s no time like the present to bite into one of Tucson’s best known treats.

The Sonoran dog itself is an overloaded, gorgeous mess.  Featuring a succulent hot dog warmly wrapped in bacon, it sits nestled into a pillowy soft bolillo roll.  Next come the toppings: pinto beans, onions, tomato, mustard, jalapeno sauce, and mayonnaise. Crown it with a roasted white chile pepper and it’s ready to enjoy!  Sound a bit overwhelming?  Feel free to pick and choose condiments in order to tailor it to your individual taste buds.  No matter how you enjoy your Sonoran hot dog, it’s the perfect way to begin to experience the unique flavor of Tucson!
