What do Cactus, Cats, and Cups Have in Common?

You can't escape cactus in Tucson.  It's everywhere-- tall, short, skinny, wide.  It comes in a variety of shapes, sizes, and even colors.  Cacti fascinate tourists and prickle the locals, but there's no denying that they're kind of one of our signature "things."

When I was growing up, whenever we had out of town visitors (our relatives lived back East), my grandparents would always take them to the cactus farm.  The visit would always coincide with one of their last days in town so that they could select miniature versions of their favorite cactus species. Staff at the nursery would carefully transplant the new plants into a suitable western-themed pot (hey, it was the 70's-- I'm sure you can picture it), surround everything in newspaper, and meticulously box everything up for the flight back home.

It just made sense, then, when our son started gathering plants for his new greenhouse, that we take a trip out to the cactus farm and take a look at some options to add to his collection.  We went to the B & B Cactus Farm out on East Speedway.

Our son likes the unique and unusual plant specimens, but they had a huge variety of cactus and succulents, from the strange to the common.

Many of the cacti were flowering. It's always amazing to see the many colors!

The Old Man of the Mountain cactus has always been one of my favorites!  They truly look like they are growing long, gray hair!

There are several cats in residence that are happy to help you shop/receive your attention, as well!

We ended up getting our son a rock cactus similar to the ones seen here.

The cactus farm has indoor species and also more mature, outdoor-ready plants for landscaping. As a protection from frost/freezing temperatures, cups are placed on the tops of some of the more sensitive cacti, like little tiny hats.  It's kind of adorable when they're standing there together.

Whether you're a native to Tucson or visiting from out of town, there's still a lot to see at B & B Cactus Farm.  Not into living works of art?  This is also a great place to search for outdoor metal sculptures and fun garden decorations for your home.  The best part? There's not a single one of those '70's western souvenir pots to be seen...
